Acer Vero 16 is a modular laptop you can actually repair yourself
Acer has unveiled the Vero 16 at IFA 2026, a 16-inch premium laptop built from the ground up to be repaired and upgraded rather than replaced. The base price is £1,599 in the UK, with a wider EMEA launch set for Q1 2027. No US pricing has been announced yet.

The repair angle
Most laptops are practically impossible to open without voiding a warranty or snapping a clip. The Vero 16 takes the opposite approach. The bottom panel comes off via a tool-free latch, exposing a user-replaceable battery and SSD. External hinges and the port-module covers on the sides are detachable. Acer has even engraved a disassembly guide directly on the chassis so you know what you're doing before you start.
The bigger claim, verified by Tom's Guide, is that the socket architecture supports physical processor swaps across at least two future hardware generations. That's an unusual promise from a mainstream manufacturer — Framework has built an entire brand around it, but the Vero 16 brings it to a conventional 16-inch form factor aimed at a much wider audience.
The specs
Inside, Acer is fitting Intel Core Ultra Series 3 chips up to the Core Ultra X9 388H, paired with Intel Arc graphics and up to 32 GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Storage tops out at 512 GB PCIe Gen4 NVMe — and that SSD, as noted above, is user-swappable.
The display is a 16-inch OLED. The top configuration runs at 2880×1800, covers 100% of the DCI-P3 colour space, hits 400 nits, and refreshes at 120 Hz. Lower configs offer 1920×1200 at 60 Hz, one of which adds touch input. Connectivity covers Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.6, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI 2.1, USB-A, a 3.5 mm combo jack, and an SD card slot. There's also a 5 MP IR camera with a physical shutter.
The sustainability case
The chassis uses a 50/50 mix of recycled and low-carbon aluminium for the lid and palm rest. The bottom cover is 60% recycled plastic; the display frame is 30% recycled. A powder coating replaces the usual solvent-based paint, cutting volatile organic compound emissions. The whole thing ships in fully recyclable packaging and carries MIL-STD-810H durability certification.
Acer frames this as expanding its sustainability model from three principles — Reduce, Reuse, Recycle — to four, with Repairability added as a formal pillar. The timing isn't accidental: the EU Right to Repair Directive took effect in July 2026, per Fieldfisher, with laptops phased into Ecodesign repair obligations from 2027 onward.
