GTA VI PC release may come sooner than expected — console shortage is pushing Rockstar's hand
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on consoles on November 19, but a PC version could follow far sooner than Rockstar's usual schedule — and a worsening console shortage may be the reason. Andy Robinson, editor-in-chief at Video Games Chronicle, said on a recent podcast that Rockstar and Take-Two are actively discussing an earlier PC release in response to the ongoing hardware crisis. No official date has been confirmed by either company.
The shortage problem
A global RAM shortage has pushed console prices to painful new heights. The PS5 disc edition now retails at £569.99 in the UK, while the Xbox Series X sits at £669.99 — up 60-71% on original MSRPs, per GamingBible. When Rockstar dropped 27 minutes of GTA VI gameplay on Netflix in late August, UK sales of PS5 and Xbox Series consoles spiked 33% and 34% respectively, analysts found. That demand surge ate into already thin stock. In the US, consoles have nearly vanished from retail entirely, with secondary market prices doubling or tripling MSRP.
Robinson's assessment is blunt: as the November launch approaches, the shortage will get worse, and Rockstar won't want to leave money on the table.
> "I think they'll move the PC release earlier — there are some rumors floating around that the PC version might come sooner than some people expect, just because of everything that's going on."
The history and the rumor
Rockstar's track record on PC ports isn't encouraging for anyone hoping for a quick turnaround. GTA V took over 18 months after its 2013 console debut to reach PC; Red Dead Redemption 2 took around 12 months. A rumor attributed to former Rockstar employees — reported by Screen Rant — put a February 2027 PC launch on the table, just three months after the console release. Most analysts have dismissed that timeline as technically unrealistic for a project of this scale.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has previously confirmed a traditional staggered release strategy, but also spent years championing cloud gaming as a way to reach players who don't own dedicated hardware. If cloud adoption accelerates into Q4 2026, that could further ease the pressure for a rapid PC port.
What it means for buyers
For now, the console launch on November 19 is the only confirmed date. Anyone unwilling to pay inflated hardware prices has two realistic options: wait and see whether a PC version materializes earlier than usual, or explore cloud gaming services that won't require a new console at all. Rockstar has said nothing publicly about changing its PC strategy — Robinson's comments are informed speculation, not a commitment.
