Mewgenics, the indie roguelike that recouped its entire development budget three hours after launch, is coming to consoles. Edmund McMillen — creator of The Binding of Isaac and Super Meat Boy — confirmed that PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 versions release on September 8, 2026, per GameReactor. The console edition costs $39.99 digitally — $10 more than the PC launch price of $29.99.

The game

Mewgenics is a turn-based tactical game built around breeding cats. You cross-breed animals to stack useful genetic traits, then send them into combat. The catch: every cat is procedurally generated, so results are unpredictable — you get positive and negative quirks in equal measure. That loop delivers well over 200 hours of playtime and more than 1,000 unique abilities across a single run, which goes a long way toward explaining the critical reception.

The game launched on PC on February 10, 2026, and hit the top spot on Steam within 24 hours, beating out Helldivers 2 and Counter-Strike 2 for concurrent players on day one. It earned a Metacritic score of around 90 — the highest-rated release of 2026 so far. One million copies sold in the first week generated an estimated $25 million in gross revenue. McMillen has confirmed a first DLC is already in development, adding four new character classes.

Console pricing and availability

Digital versions land September 8, 2026, on all three platforms at $39.99 / £32. Physical editions are priced at $49.99 and are confirmed for PS5 and Switch 2 — no Xbox physical has been announced — with those shipping in Q1 2027. Console ports are published by Nicalis, who also handled the Isaac ports.

The $10 premium over the PC version is worth flagging. Mewgenics is currently on sale on Steam for less than the original $29.99 launch price, so console buyers are paying a notable premium for the convenience of couch play. Whether that's worth it depends entirely on how you feel about breeding nightmare cats on a TV screen — which, for the record, is exactly as entertaining as it sounds.
