Tesla's Cybercab motor ditches rare-earth metals — and doesn't lose range
Tesla has built a new electric motor for its Cybercab robotaxi that contains no rare-earth metals — a notable engineering shift that also reduces the company's exposure to China's near-total grip on rare-earth processing. The motor is 18% smaller and 25% lighter than Tesla's previous drive units, and Elon Musk says the vehicle still delivers around 293 miles of range. For US consumers, the timing matters: ongoing tariff uncertainty around Chinese-controlled materials has made supply-chain diversification a live concern across the auto industry.
The engineering claim
Rare-earth elements such as neodymium, dysprosium, and terbium are standard in the high-strength permanent magnets that power most EV motors. China controls roughly 90% of global rare-earth processing, per REEx, which gives it significant leverage over any manufacturer that relies on them. A typical EV uses around a kilogram of these materials — manageable for a small fleet, but a major dependency at millions of units per year.
Tesla hasn't disclosed exactly what it uses instead. Industry analysts point to ferrite or aluminum-nickel-cobalt (AlNiCo) magnets as the most likely candidates. Electrek notes both materials come with real trade-offs — ferrite magnets are weaker and bulkier, while AlNiCo runs hot under load — which explains why no other major automaker has managed to scale this approach yet. Musk called the achievement "extremely hard," per Benzinga.

Cybercab only — for now
The technology is exclusive to the Cybercab at this point. Tesla launched the vehicle in Austin on September 3, 2026, but operations remain limited to parts of the city, and no expansion timeline has been announced publicly. Fewer than 50 Cybercabs are registered in Texas, which means mass-production validation is still a long way off.
Competitor Waymo already runs more than 3,000 vehicles across 11 US cities, which puts Tesla's launch in perspective. The Cybercab's rare-earth-free motor may be a real technical achievement, but scale is where the robotaxi race is actually being decided.
Whether the new motor eventually comes to the Model 3 or Model Y — Tesla's volume sellers — remains unclear. Given Tesla's consistent push to lower production costs on both models, the technology seems like a logical next step. The company just hasn't said when, or whether, that happens.
