Google quietly kills the Pixel Tablet after just three years
Google has pulled the Pixel Tablet from its store without a word of explanation, effectively ending the device's three-year run. The tablet category disappeared from the Google Store's navigation menu entirely, and the product itself was marked out of stock before being delisted. Amazon and Best Buy now show zero inventory — new units or third-party — making the Pixel Tablet practically impossible to buy.
The end of a hybrid that never quite worked
The Pixel Tablet launched in June 2023 at $499 with a charging dock, or $399 without. The dock was the pitch: one device that worked as both a tablet and a smart home display. In practice, the 16:9 screen and mid-range Tensor G2 chip made it hard to justify the price against an iPad or a Galaxy Tab, and that dual-purpose angle failed to stick with buyers. Engadget was first to report the store removal, citing it as spotted the same day it happened.
Google's VP Shakil Barkat said last year that the company halted tablet production pending a "worthwhile future" — which, reading between the lines, means no near-term return to the category. A Pixel Tablet 2 was reportedly close to ready in 2025 but was cancelled on profitability grounds, and 9to5Google confirms a planned third-generation model was shelved as well. Google has not issued an official discontinuation statement.
What this means if you own one
Existing owners are not left stranded immediately. Google extended software support by two years in early 2026, pushing the end-of-life date to June 2028. That means security patches and Android updates — including Android 18 and possibly Android 19 — will still arrive for the next couple of years.
No replacement in sight
Google's exit leaves the Android tablet space to Samsung and a handful of other manufacturers. For anyone in the market for a tablet right now, the Pixel Tablet is effectively gone — and there is nothing from Google to replace it. The iPad and Galaxy Tab S series remain the obvious alternatives at similar or higher price points.
