A $1,365 AI mattress from China claims to detect sleep apnea — but the FDA hasn't cleared it
A Chinese smart mattress launched on JD.com this week with a bold claim: it can detect obstructive sleep apnea and adjust your sleeping position in real time. The Jingzao X JoyInside AI Smart Mattress is crowdfunding at 9,699 CNY (around $1,365), well below US rivals — but its medical claims have no FDA or CE clearance, and there's no confirmed path to US or UK shelves.
The hardware
The mattress uses a technology Jingzao calls AutoFit: 20 high-precision sensors feed data to a 10-zone adjustment system, and an AI layer tweaks the surface position before, during, and after sleep. Left and right sides calibrate independently, so couples don't have to compromise on firmness. A dual-mode piezoelectric sensor with six reading layers and 80,000 measurement points tracks micro-movements and pressure changes with a claimed 1 ms response time.

Positioning is adjustable too — head up to 60°, legs up to 40°, and lumbar support shifts 10 cm in 1° steps. A graphene heating system ramps temperature at 2°C per second and can target just the feet or lower back independently. Voice control is built in, and Jingzao backs the motor with a 10-year warranty.

The apnea claim
The mattress monitors 32 health metrics and, according to Jingzao, can detect signs of obstructive sleep apnea — then gently reposition the surface to ease breathing. It generates daily, weekly, and monthly sleep reports.
That's a significant claim. Right now, the only mattress-based device with FDA 510(k) clearance for sleep apnea screening is the Withings Sleep Rx, which received approval in September 2024, per FierceBiotech. Eight Sleep is pursuing FDA clearance for its Pod series but hasn't secured it yet. Meanwhile, Tom's Guide notes that Tempur-Pedic's AI-tracked smart beds start at $9,298 — the premium US market expects regulatory credentials to match premium prices.

Availability
For now, Jingzao is a China-only story. The mattress is live on JD.com crowdfunding, but no US or UK distributor has been announced, and there's no confirmed international shipping. If you're dealing with suspected sleep apnea, the NHS and US sleep clinics remain the medically validated route — and the Withings Sleep Rx is the only FDA-cleared at-home option in that specific category.
