Tesla Roadster Gets an October 1 Reveal — Musk Wants Witnesses
Tesla has confirmed a live reveal event for its long-delayed next-generation Roadster on October 1, 2026, in Waco, Texas, starting at 8:30 p.m. Eastern. Invitations have gone out exclusively to reservation holders and are non-transferable. The base model is priced at $200,000, with the Founder Series at $250,000 — making this one of the most expensive production Teslas ever.
The event's tagline, "Go for launch," is lifted directly from rocket mission control — a nod to the headline feature Tesla has been teasing: a cold-gas thruster package developed in partnership with SpaceX. Waco is also home to SpaceX's McGregor engine test facility, so the location is no coincidence.

The thruster claim
The SpaceX Package is supposed to push the Roadster from 0–60 mph in under 1.1 seconds using compressed-gas thrusters built into the bodywork. The base car, without thrusters, targets 0–60 in 1.9 seconds. Both figures are extraordinary — and both remain unverified outside of Tesla's own statements.
As Forbes has noted, the regulatory status of cold-gas thrusters on public roads is completely unresolved. Whether the system can legally operate on US or UK streets — and under what conditions — hasn't been addressed by Tesla or any road authority. Musk has previously suggested the car could briefly "fly," but those comments remain unconfirmed.
Musk himself acknowledged the credibility problem when he said the live audience is there to confirm "it's not AI" — a rare admission that years of missed deadlines have eroded public trust.
A nine-year wait
The Roadster was first unveiled as a prototype in 2017. Since then, production has been pushed back repeatedly, with no binding delivery commitment ever made. Motor1 confirms the current production target is 2027 or 2028 at Gigafactory Texas — still one to two years away even if October goes smoothly.
For UK buyers, pricing has been quoted in the range of £160,000–£200,000, though no official UK on-sale date has been confirmed.
What October 1 actually proves
A reveal event is not a production announcement. Tesla will show the car — likely in motion — but the gap between a controlled demonstration and a road-legal, deliverable vehicle remains wide. The thruster system in particular faces an undefined path through safety certification on both sides of the Atlantic.
If the performance numbers hold up on the night, the Roadster will be a genuine engineering story. If the specs get quietly revised, it won't be the first time. The RSVP deadline for reservation holders is September 16.
