iQOO 16 debuts the world's first 2K 165Hz display — and a battery that dwarfs the competition
The iQOO 16 goes on sale in China on September 29, and it arrives with a specification sheet that's hard to ignore. Its 6.85-inch display is the first on any phone to combine 2K resolution with a 165Hz refresh rate — a combination previously impossible without heavy battery penalties. Add an 8,400 mAh cell to that, and this starts to look less like a standard flagship and more like a statement.
The display
The screen uses Samsung Display's M16 panel paired with LEAD 2.0 technology. The key engineering change is the removal of the traditional polarizer layer, which cuts panel power consumption by roughly 30% compared to a 1.5K 165Hz panel, per Seoul Economic Daily. That efficiency gain is what makes the resolution-plus-refresh-rate combination viable in a phone-sized package. Peak brightness hits 2,800 nits across the full panel and 10,000 nits locally — numbers that should hold up outdoors on the brightest days. For anyone sensitive to flicker, DC Dimming and a 3,300Hz PWM frequency are both included.
The same M16 panel is confirmed for the Samsung Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra, according to Notebookcheck, so this technology will eventually reach a much wider audience — just not immediately.
The battery and specs
An 8,400 mAh battery is genuinely unusual in a smartphone. The OnePlus 15 manages 7,300 mAh; that gap of 1,100 mAh is meaningful at the end of a long day. Charging is rated at 100W wired, with 50W wireless reportedly in the mix too, though the wireless figure isn't officially confirmed, per GSMArena battery specs.
Inside sits a new flagship Snapdragon platform — the specific chip hasn't been officially named ahead of the September 29 event — alongside iQOO's own Q4 gaming co-processor. Top configurations offer 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. The software is Android 17 under iQOO's OriginOS 7 skin.
Camera hardware keeps pace: three 50-megapixel sensors cover main (1/1.3-inch), ultrawide, and periscope telephoto roles. The design, which iQOO calls "Tomorrow's Porthole," wraps those cameras in a circular housing that leans into the brand's gaming-and-futurist aesthetic. IP68 and IP69 ratings cover dust and water resistance, and stereo speakers round out the package.
Availability
The launch and same-day sales are confirmed for China only. iQOO has no official distributor in the UK, and no US or European launch date has been announced. If the brand follows past patterns, a global rollout — if it happens — would come months later. For now, the iQOO 16 is a useful preview of where 2026 flagship displays are heading, even if you can't buy one yet.
