Tesla is embedding a Starlink V5 satellite terminal into its Cybercab robotaxi — and the catch is right there in SpaceX's own documentation: the V5 is designated "not intended for in-motion use." Production at Giga Texas began in Q2 2026, with around 250 units already visible in factory lots by late July, and public rides launching in Austin, Houston, Dallas, Miami, Tampa, and Orlando.

The V5 antenna sits flush inside the Cybercab's rear structure alongside 5G/LTE and GPS radios. SpaceX engineered it for home internet, not a moving car — which makes Tesla's choice unusual. The company hasn't published any engineering response to that designation, and it remains unclear whether the Cybercab runs custom firmware that enables operation while in motion, or whether the terminal only connects when the vehicle is stationary, per Yahoo Autos/GadgetReview.

The hardware specs are genuinely impressive. The V5 delivers speeds above 375 Mbps, draws just 35–50W (about half the power of the previous V4 terminal), weighs 1.1 kg (62% lighter than V4), and has a 35% smaller antenna — compact enough to integrate without disrupting aerodynamics or overloading the car's electrical system.

The claim vs. the reality

Elon Musk says the satellite connection will support 4K video streaming for passengers — a plausible use case in a car with no steering wheel or pedals, where riders need something to do. But Motor1 notes the Cybercab's primary cities all have dense 5G coverage, which means satellite is more likely a backup for fleet dispatch in dead zones than the main connectivity layer.

That distinction matters. The FCC and NHTSA have not publicly clarified how a residential-grade satellite terminal gets approved for vehicular use. Rivals Waymo and Cruise rely on conventional cellular and LTE — no satellite required. Tesla's approach signals deep confidence in SpaceX integration, but until the firmware question is answered and a regulatory path is confirmed, the 4K streaming pitch is a promise, not a guarantee.

What to expect

The Cybercab is a US-only rollout for now. Starlink V5 hardware isn't available to consumers in the US or UK yet, and no timeline for broader retail availability has been confirmed. September 4 was flagged as the start of the first public Cybercab rides — which will be the first real test of whether the satellite connection performs as Musk described.
