iPhone Duo gets Apple Pencil support — but only the cheaper model works

The reason Pro won't work

The Apple Pencil Pro charges magnetically, attaching to a flat surface on compatible iPads. The iPhone Duo doesn't have that surface, so the Pro model simply has nowhere to connect or charge, per MacRumors. The USB-C Pencil, by contrast, charges through a port under a sliding cap — no magnetic pad needed.

What the USB-C Pencil can and can't do

The USB-C model supports tilt detection, which is useful for basic sketching and note-taking. What it lacks is substantial: no pressure sensitivity, no squeeze gesture, no barrel roll, no haptic feedback, no double-tap shortcut, and no Find My tracking. According to Apple Newsroom, the stylus works on both the inner folding display and the outer cover screen — a first for any iPhone.

For casual annotation or quick sketches, the USB-C Pencil is probably enough. For illustrators or designers who rely on pressure curves in apps like Procreate, the stripped-down feature set is likely to disappoint. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 dropped S Pen support entirely, so the Duo still holds a stylus edge in the foldable market — just a narrower one than the spec sheet might imply.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB and tops out at $3,199 for 2TB. In the UK, pricing mirrors that in pounds: £1,999 to £3,199. Pre-orders open October 16 at 5 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. BST, with units shipping October 23 across 70-plus markets.
