Siri AI launches September 14 in English — five more languages follow in October
Apple has confirmed that Siri AI — its rebuilt, large-language-model-powered assistant — goes live on September 14 alongside iOS 27. The English-only launch puts Apple in direct competition with Google Gemini and ChatGPT, though two significant limitations cloud the debut: a subscription paywall on advanced features, and a hard block on the assistant in the EU and China.
The rollout plan
Apple VP of AI product marketing Lilian Rincon announced during the company's September event that five additional languages arrive in October: French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Broader Apple Intelligence — the wider AI layer baked into iOS 27 — will eventually cover 16 languages, adding Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Danish, Dutch, German, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, Turkish, and Vietnamese to the mix, per the Apple official announcement.
The new Siri is a meaningful step up from its predecessor. It uses large language models and integrates more deeply with Apple Intelligence features — think on-screen awareness, cross-app actions, and more natural back-and-forth conversation. Apple has also confirmed that some cloud-heavy Siri AI features will carry daily usage limits. Unlocking expanded access requires an iCloud+ subscription, which starts at $0.99/month in the US. Free-tier users will still get Siri AI, but with a ceiling on the most powerful responses.
The catch — EU and China sit this one out
Users in the European Union won't have access to Siri AI on iPhone or iPad at launch. The block stems from Apple's ongoing dispute with regulators over the Digital Markets Act — the EU's framework for policing big tech platforms. eWeek's regulatory analysis notes that Mac and Vision Pro are not subject to the same restriction, creating a fragmented experience across Apple's own device lineup. No timeline has been given for EU iPhone and iPad access.
China is similarly excluded, though for separate regulatory reasons. Apple has not outlined a path to availability in either region.
What to expect at launch
For US and UK buyers, the September 14 date is firm. Hardware requirements have been confirmed for iPhone 15 Pro and above — older devices won't qualify. If you're on a supported phone and an iCloud+ plan, the full experience should be available on day one. Those on free iCloud will get a limited version of Siri AI, with the more demanding cloud-based features rationed.
Apple is entering a market where ChatGPT and Gemini are already well established and free to use. The iCloud+ requirement for advanced Siri AI features adds a friction point that neither major rival currently imposes.
