Gears of War: E-Day has a release date — October 6, 2026 — and it lands day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at no extra cost. Developed by The Coalition in Unreal Engine 5, it's the first full Gears title since 2019's Gears 5, and Microsoft is billing it as the franchise's return to form. For Game Pass subscribers, that's a AAA tentpole arriving without a $69.99 price tag.

The story

E-Day is a prequel set 14 years before the original 2006 Gears of War, during Emergence Day — the catastrophic moment when the Locust tore out of the ground across the planet Sera and destroyed entire cities within hours. The game follows a young Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in their earliest battles against an enemy no one understood yet. A new dramatic trailer shows the chaos of those first hours: COG soldiers fighting in the streets while civilians shelter underground — with no guarantee the Locust won't reach them.

The campaign runs 10–12 hours. Multiplayer ships with Horde Siege, a 12-player co-op mode, and a 4v4 Versus PvP mode. Split-screen co-op is available on console.

The tech

Every asset was rebuilt from scratch — nothing carried over from previous Gears titles. The Coalition used Unreal Engine 5's MegaLights system, which renders hundreds of individual shadow-casting light sources simultaneously at 60fps on Xbox Series X, per WCCFtech. The result is a noticeably darker, more atmospheric look than earlier entries.

On PC, E-Day is the first game to ship NVIDIA RTX Mega Geometry — a new technique that applies full-detail Nanite geometry to ray tracing, per VideoCardz. The game also supports DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution and NVIDIA Reflex on GeForce RTX hardware, alongside AMD FSR and Intel XeSS for other GPU owners. Minimum PC specs require an RTX 5050 or RX 6600 and 130GB of SSD space.

Where it fits

Game Pass Ultimate currently runs $17–20 per month in the US and UK. Microsoft has leaned hard on value-per-subscription to compete with PlayStation's dominance in retail, and E-Day is the clearest statement yet that flagship franchises are now acquisition tools for the service. According to the Xbox Official Store, Play Anywhere cross-buy is included — buy once on PC or console and access both. No PlayStation version has been announced.
