Apple Intelligence is going freemium — and the limits are already here

Apple has confirmed that several Apple Intelligence features will hit usage caps — and getting more access will cost extra. A new Apple Support page outlines the rate-limit framework, though exact daily or hourly quotas won't be published until the iOS 27 launch. If you use Apple Intelligence heavily, this is worth knowing now.

The features affected

The rate limits apply to server-side features: Siri AI, photo-editing tools including Clean Up, Extend, and Spatial Reframing, Image Playground, and the AFM 3 Cloud and AFM 3 Cloud Pro models available in Shortcuts. Third-party apps that tap Apple Foundation Models via Private Cloud Compute are also in scope.

When you hit the cap on any of these, that feature simply becomes unavailable for a period, then resets. Apple hasn't said how long the reset window is, and exact quotas will vary by feature, query complexity, and server load.

Apple also reserves the right to throttle or suspend access for automated, fraudulent, or excessive queries — and can revise the terms at any time.

Tied to iCloud+

The clearest pricing signal so far applies to Home video summaries. The number of compatible cameras depends on your iCloud+ plan: one camera on the 2 TB tier (£8.99/month in the UK), two on 6 TB, and up to five on the 12 TB plan. Broader AI usage limits will also scale with your iCloud+ tier.

Apple has said it plans to offer paid access to higher limits beyond that, but hasn't announced pricing. Mac User (UK) reports that analysts expect a separate "Apple Intelligence+" tier in the range of $10–$20 per month, potentially arriving in 2027 — though Apple has not confirmed this.

For context, Claude Pro costs $20/month for around 45 messages per five hours, and ChatGPT Plus costs $20/month for 150 messages per three hours. Apple's quotas remain undisclosed, so a direct comparison isn't yet possible.

What this means in practice

Apple is quietly embedding AI compute costs inside iCloud+ rather than itemizing them separately. For light users, the free tier may be enough — at least initially. Heavy users of Siri AI or Image Playground should watch for the iOS 27 announcement this autumn, when Apple is expected to publish the actual limits and any new pricing tiers.
